Brief history ...
In 1937, Volkswagen (VW) was founded as part of a trend by German carmakers to develop a "peoples' car" or "Volkswagen", independently of the predominant luxury automobile market. A state-sponsored project specified for a basic vehicle capable of transporting two adults and three children at 100 km/h (62 mph) for around the price of a small motorcycle.
The well known engineer, Ferdinand Porsche, who had begun a motor vehicle development and consulting company in 1931 was given the task just three years later. Prototypes of the car called the "KdF-Wagen" with the distinctive round shape and air-cooled, flat-four, rear-mounted engine appeared from 1936 onwards and by 1946, production reached 1,000 cars a month.
VW expanded its’ product line in 1961 with the introduction of four Type 3 models and in 1964, Volkswagen purchased Auto Union, which owned the Audi brand, ultimately merging to create the Audi company and adding a "Super Beetle" in 1971. A new wave of Volkswagens known as the Passat, Scirocco, Golf and Polo were released throughout the 1970s and early 1980s.
By the late 1990s, VW had also acquired the three luxury brands of Lamborghini (through Audi), Bentley, Bugatti, SEAT and Czech car maker Skoda. In 1999 the VW Mk4 Golf entered the UK’s top 10 of most popular new cars. The sixth edition of the VW Golf, which launched in 2008, gave rise to the blueprint for models such as the VW Jetta, VW Scirocco, SEAT León, SEAT Toledo, Skoda Octavia and Audi A3 hatchback ranges.
Currently Europe's largest carmaker, the world headquarters of Volkswagen are still located in Wolfsburg, Germany and is a publicly traded company.
