First built in 1947, the Land Rover prototype was originally designed for farm and light industrial use when launched in April 1948 at the Amsterdam motor show. In 1967 the Rover Company became part of Leyland Motor Corporation, later merging into British Leyland in 1968 and then becoming The Rover Group, acquired by British Aerospace in 1988 and then BMW in 1994. In 2000, Land Rover was sold to Ford Motor Company and finally, in June 2008, together with Jaguar Cars, Land Rover passed into subsidiary ownership of the Indian TATA Motors.

Based in Gaydon, Warwickshire, Land Rover vehicles are currently assembled in the company's Halewood and Solihull plants, and in May, 2007 saw the 4,000,000th Land Rover, a Discovery 3, roll off the production line. The second most enduring four-wheel-drive car brand in the world after Jeep, global sales reached 194,000 in 2009.
